Ewha’s IBS Center for Quantum Nanoscience Receives the Highest Grade in Its Eighth-Year Performance Evaluation
Ewha’s IBS Center for Quantum Nanoscience Receives the Highest Grade in Its Eighth-Year Performance Evaluation The Center for Quantum Nanoscience (QNS) of Ewha’s Institute for Basic Science (IBS) was awarded the highest grade of “Excellent” in its eighth-year performance evaluation. This marks the second consecutive time that the center has received the highest rating, following its fifth-year review conducted in 2022, thereby reaffirming the center’s global research competence and operational excellence. Given the long-term nature of basic science research, the IBS conducts the first performance evaluation of its research centers in the fifth year since their establishment, followed by regular evaluations every three years. The eighth-year performance evaluation for the QNS, established in 2017, was conducted by an evaluation panel comprising world-renowned scholars and experts both in Korea and overseas. According to the evaluation results, the center’s technologies for quantum spin control and measurement represent a world-leading level, attesting to the center’s excellence at the highest global standard in terms of its original research approach, ability to develop instrumentation, and the resulting scientific achievements. The QNS has established one of the most advanced research environments in Korea, including an ultra-precise, low-vibration laboratory, to perform the measurement and control of quantum phenomena at the atomic scale, while producing innovative achievements in quantum computing and metrology by publishing a number of key papers in leading international journals such as Science and realizing Korea’s first qubit platform. The center was recognized as a model for its diverse research culture, as demonstrated by a high proportion of female talent (57 percent) and a significant share of international researchers. The center was also highly rated for its efforts to promote public engagement by holding an art contest and conducting the NanoKOMIK project—a science lecture program. QNS Director Andreas Heinrich stated, “Achieving the highest rating for the second consecutive term is an affirmation of our vision to build the field of quantum science from the ground up. It also underscores the impact of our original research approach, which continues to pioneer new frontiers in the field of quantum research. We will continue to pursue world-class research that will serve as a cornerstone for Korea’s quantum future.” The success of the QNS is largely attributable to the university’s full-scale investment and enduring dedication to advancing excellence in research. Since hosting the QNS in 2017, the university has established a dedicated collaborative research facility—including Korea’s lowest-vibration environment—which is designed to meet the exacting demands of ultra-precision research. This world-leading research environment has served as a vital platform for advancements in quantum research, while support from Ewha has been crucial in allowing the QNS to attract leading international researchers and produce innovative outcomes. Graduates who trained at the center are now advancing as research leaders at prominent European universities and global companies. Looking ahead, through its continued collaboration with the IBS and the QNS, Ewha will integrate its long-term strategy with educational programs to advance basic science and build on the relevant research ecosystem. As a central hub within the quantum science ecosystem, this collaboration also underpins the university’s commitment toward cultivating the next generation of scientific and technological talent and enhancing the nation’s scientific and technological competitiveness through world-class research.
“Scranton-gil” Designated as Honorary Street in Front of Ewha Womans University
“Scranton-gil” Designated as Honorary Street in Front of Ewha Womans University Ewha held a joint ceremony with the Seodaemun-gu Office in the ECC building at 11 a.m. on June 20 (Fri.) in order to commemorate the designation of Scranton-gil as an honorary street. This honorary street designation was intended to honor the devotion and contribution of the missionary Mary F. Scranton (1832-1909), the founder of Ewha Haktang as Korea’s first educational institution for women, in commemoration of the 140th anniversary of Christian missions in Korea. Scranton-gil spans the entire 555-meter length and 15-meter width of Ewhayeodae-gil, located in front of Ewha Womans University in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, where signboards and street name plates indicating the honorary street will be installed at the center and both ends of the street. The ceremony featured a progress report by the Seodaemun-gu Office, followed by a commemorative speech from the District Mayor of Seodaemun-gu Lee Sung-heon, congratulatory remarks from the Ewha Womans University President Hyang-Sook Lee, and the unveiling of the signboard for Scranton-gil. “The missionary Scranton took the first step for women’s education in 1886 with the forward-thinking conviction that women deserve to learn, which became the cornerstone of Ewha Womans University,” remarked President Lee in her speech. “The newly-named Scranton-gil is not merely the name of a place, but a symbolic space that honors Ewha’s roots, reflects on the path we have walked, and reaffirms our path forward.” Lee also added, “Ewha will continue to nurture women leaders based on the Christian spirit and the values of truth, goodness, and beauty, while growing as a university that pursues harmony with the local community.” Besides Scranton-gil near Ewha, the Seodaemun-gu Office also designated Underwood-gil in front of Yonsei University as well as Appenzeller-gil in front of Methodist Theological University as honorary streets. The district office plans to hold the respective commemorative events in order. The designation period lasts from April in 2025 to April in 2030, with the possibility of future extension.
Ewha Ranks First among Korean Universities for Gender Equality in the THE World University Impact Rankings...
Ewha Ranks First among Korean Universities for Gender Equality in the THE World University Impact Rankings for Six Consecutive Years Ewha ranked first among Korean universities for six years in a row in the Gender Equality category of the THE World University Impact Rankings published by the Times Higher Education (THE), a British publication of world university rankings. Ewha also ranked eighth in Korea in the categories of Climate Action as well as Affordable and Clean Energy, thereby earning recognition as a leading educational institution in building a sustainable society. The THE World University Rankings are considered to be among the world’s top three university rankings alongside the QS World University Rankings and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), and launched the THE World University Impact Rankings in 2019 in order to assess universities’ contributions to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the betterment of society. To this end, the THE World University Impact Rankings evaluate the efforts made by universities toward the 17 UN SDGs, with the social responsibilities of universities comprising key evaluation criteria. As opposed to existing evaluations that focus on the academic accomplishments and social reputation of universities, the THE World University Impact Rankings are gaining attention as the world’s first evaluation to assess universities’ contributions to sustainable global development in areas such as climate change, gender equality, and the sustainable growth and well-being of humanity. Ewha has firmly established itself as the undisputed leader in women’s education by participating in the THE World University Impact Rankings for the second consecutive year and retaining first place among Korean universities in the Gender Equality category for six years in a row. The Gender Equality category aims to assess universities’ research performance on gender equality, ratio of high-ranking female officers, and anti-discrimination policy, serving as a yardstick for understanding universities’ social responsibilities to create a gender-equal society. In addition, Ewha secured eighth place nationwide in the Climate Action and the Affordable and Clean Energy categories. Notably, Ewha is the first university to participate in an initiative supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF), which is designed to develop climate information, communication, and early-warning systems for five Pacific Islands countries. Moreover, Ewha was selected as the best-performing university in the energy-saving category of the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s green campus campaign in 2017 by consistently implementing measures to reduce carbon emissions and actively adopting environmentally-friendly energy in new constructions and renovations. Furthermore, Ewha is at the forefront of research and development for core convergence technologies, based on its recruitment of the country’s leading scholars in climate energy and environmental engineering and its establishment of the Climate Adaptation, Resilience and Sustainability Institute (CARES).
