International Conference and Recruitment Briefing Session Jointly Held by Ewha and the Financial Supervisory Service
International Conference and Recruitment Briefing Session Jointly Held by Ewha and the Financial Supervisory Service Ewha Womans University partnered with the Financial Supervisory Service to host the 2024 International Conference and Recruitment Briefing Session for Youths on August 27 (Tue.) at the Lee Sam-bong Hall of the ECC building. Since 2019, Ewha has jointly organized the said international conference on the themes of future finance and green finance with the Financial Supervisory Service, aiming to explore a sustainable future through industry-academia cooperation. This year marked the sixth edition of the event. Held under the theme of “Toward the Era of Green Transition,” the conference was attended by stakeholders from financial authorities, financial companies, and research institutes, including Ewha, the Financial Supervisory Service, the Financial Services Agency of Japan, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co., Société Générale, Carbon Free Alliance, and BloombergNEF, who gathered to discuss pressing issues and measures for achieving carbon neutrality and responding to climate change. The first part of the international conference began at 9 a.m. with an opening address by Governor Lee Bokhyun of the Financial Supervisory Service and welcoming remarks by President Eun Mee Kim. This was followed by expressions of congratulations and support from global figures for the conference and its goal of presenting sustainable green finance models. Attendees included: Yoon Han-hong, chairperson of the National Assembly National Policy Committee; Kim Sang-hyup, Co-chairperson of the Presidential Commission on Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth; Colin Crooks, Ambassador of the United Kingdom; Georg Wilfried Schmidt, Ambassador of Germany; Peter Van der Vilet, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands; and Maria Castillo Fernandez, Ambassador of the European Union in Korea. In her welcoming remarks, President Eun Mee Kim stated, “Environmental issues cannot be addressed by technological advancements alone and must be supported by a significant societal shift, in which awareness and change among individuals who drive that transformation are paramount.” She added, “I hope that today’s conference will serve as a platform for industry-government-academia cooperation for low-carbon transition and climate change response, contributing to the exploration of innovative and practical ways to tackle the climate crisis.” The international conference commenced with a keynote speech by President Lee Hoesung of the Carbon Free Alliance, on the topic of “The Role of the Green Transition and Carbon-free Energy.” It was followed by presentations on seven topics that explored the role of the financial industry in the low-carbon transition while sharing policies and market trends in the respective countries of speakers including: Satoshi Ikeda, Chief Sustainable Finance Officer at the Financial Services Agency of Japan; Georgina Lok, head of market development at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority; Masaaki Nagamura, general manager for international initiatives at Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co.; Ronald Young, head of Sustainable Finance for Asia at Société Générale; Jonathan Luan, head of Sustainability Research at Bloomberg; and Jaehak Hwang, Senior Investigator at the Financial Supervisory Service. In the afternoon, the event continued with the A.I. Challenge competition and the Recruitment Briefing Session for Youths, featuring 15 companies, including KB Kookmin Bank and ING. Jointly hosted by Ewha and the Financial Supervisory Service, this event serves as a platform to explore the future of green finance—a key pillar in achieving carbon neutrality amid the climate crisis—and to discuss potential responses for the domestic financial sector while identifying new growth opportunities. Additionally, by supporting youth employment, the event fosters innovative ideas for future finance and raises awareness of future finance among young people.
Ewha Research Team Leads Original Technology Development Projects in Life Sciences, Neuroscience, and Environmental Engi
Ewha Research Team Leads Original Technology Development Projects in Life Sciences, Neuroscience, and Environmental Engineering Researchers from Ewha Womans University were selected for the Original Technology Development Project, funded by the National Research Foundation of Korea, to drive the development of key technologies for advancing industrial innovation and growth. Professor Roh Tae-Young from the Department of Life Science (Graduate School) has been selected for the Future Convergence Technology Pioneer Project (strategic) under the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) Research Program promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT. Professor Roh will be awarded KRW 4.5 billion over a period of up to five years (two + three years) to investigate the mechanisms behind dormancy and activation in liver stem cells using epigenomic analysis. The Future Convergence Technology Pioneer Project supports convergence research focused on developing key original technologies capable of creating or transforming paradigms in new technologies and industries. With his selection for this project, Professor Roh plans to present a technological solution to challenges in stem cell research that cannot be addressed with current technologies. The Pioneer Research Center (PRC) aims to secure technological competitiveness that can be applied to liver diseases and other types of cancer, by building a stem cell dormancy model, developing techniques to retain stemness and track cancerization, discovering biomarkers for detecting dormancy and developing related new drugs, and advancing technologies for dormancy-activation transitions. The PRC at Ewha is a convergence research team that includes Professor Roh Tae-Young (principal investigator) and Professor Hyuk-jin Cha from the College of Pharmacy at Seoul National University. The research team is expected to develop technologies for biomarker discovery and stem cell fate regulation through (epigenetic) genomic profiling and gene regulatory network identification based on a stem cell/organoid model in the liver regeneration process, and ultimately conduct convergence research that enables the clinical application of the original technologies required for the treatment of liver diseases, including cirrhosis, alcoholic fatty liver disease, hepatitis, and liver cancer, and tissue regeneration. The research team, led by Professor Lyoo In Kyoon from the Ewha Brain Institute, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, has also been selected to conduct a new project for the 2024 Future Convergence Technology Pioneer Project (strategic). Under this project, Professor Lyoo’s team will be awarded KRW 4.5 billion over four and a half years until December 2028 to conduct a project titled “Development of a Mental Health Care Platform for High-risk Professionals Through Mind Vital Sign Monitoring”. The research team will use wearable devices to gather various digital biomarkers from high-risk occupational groups exposed to severe job stress and conduct advanced AI modeling research using big data for precision medicine, including high-quality multimodal brain imaging data. Subsequently, the team plans to build an integrated platform that monitors and predicts the risks of mental health issues and human error in real time and provides immediate digital treatment. This research involves a number of renowned experts in the fields of advanced neuroscience, medicine, pharmacology, AI modeling, development of digital biomarkers and digital therapeutics. Through this interdisciplinary convergence research, the team aims to establish an AI-based integrated management solution for mental health risks that employs new technologies distinct from existing methods, thereby providing more systematic solutions to various stress-related situations that have recently emerged as pressing social concerns. Additionally, the research findings are expected to be applied to practical settings in collaboration with Samsung Electronics and utilized by various requesting organizations including the National Fire Agency, Seoul Metropolitan Fire & Disaster Headquarters, Supreme Prosecutors’ Office, and Korean National Police Agency. Professor Chanhyuk Park of the Department of Environmental Engineering was selected for Original Technology Development Project (pioneering) for Nano and Future Materials under the Ministry of Science and ICT’s Nano and Future Materials Technology Development Program. Professor Park will receive a total of KRW 5 billion in research funding by 2028 to develop original technologies for environmental nanomaterials aimed at the treatment of unregulated hazardous pollutants in wastewater generated by new industrial manufacturing processes and the recovery of resources. Ceramic membrane technology based on environmental nanomaterials is gaining attention for its ability to effectively treat wastewater containing high concentrations of hazardous substances produced in the manufacturing processes of new industrial sectors such as semiconductors, secondary batteries, and displays. Ceramic membranes provide excellent physical and chemical durability, maintaining stable performance even under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions. They are particularly effective at removing hazardous substances such as heavy metals and organic pollutants, while also enabling the recovery and recycling of essential resources used in new industrial manufacturing processes, such as nitrogen- and fluorine-based compounds, from wastewater. Additionally, ceramic membranes consume less energy than other wastewater treatment technologies and retain their performance even after extended use. As the lead research institution, Ewha will collaborate with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Pusan National University, the Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS), and the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT) to conduct research on wastewater treatment technologies with tangible benefits for the public. The research will focus on developing key technologies for treating unregulated water pollutants, including carcinogens found in wastewater from new industries, while also repurposing them as valuable resources, ultimately contributing to the improvement of public safety concerning water sources.

Top Grade Obtained in Educational Innovation in 2024 University Innovation Support Project Evaluation Ewha Womans University has received the highest rating of S-grade in the 2024 University Innovation Support Project Evaluation announced by the Ministry of Education, specifically in the field of educational innovation. Ewha was highly praised for its proactive implementation and successful operation of flexible academic systems, including the introduction of the Scranton College interdisciplinary major in 2009 and integrated selection for regular admissions by academic division in 2018, both of which ensured complete freedom of choice in students’ selection of majors. In particular, the university was recognized for its excellent multifaceted support to ensure the successful adaptation of students into their freely-chosen majors, such as strengthening the operation of the support system involving advisors, adjunct professors, and mentors; offering personalized support to help freshmen adapt to university life; facilitating networking and community-building among senior and junior students; operating courses designed for major exploration; offering programs focused on major counseling and exploration as well as establishing data-based support systems. The efforts to ensure the sustainable operation of the autonomous major selection system also positively impacted the overall results of the performance evaluation. This was achieved by categorizing students’ experiences of adapting to university life and exploring majors through policy research projects based on six years of accumulated operational data, which enabled the design of customized roadmaps for each category in order to facilitate systematic support. Additionally, Ewha was recognized for its excellence in establishing a systematic governance structure for collecting feedback from the university community, driving educational innovation, and offering a diverse range of convergence education programs. President Eun Mee Kim stated, “Since 2018, Ewha has been leading the way in open-major integrated admissions through the HOKMA College of General Education and working to foster future-oriented convergent talents. I believe these efforts have led to our impressive achievements.” She added, “We will continue our commitment to developing an innovative research and education platform aimed at establishing a future-oriented educational ecosystem.”
Research Team under Physics Professor William Jo Develops Next-generation Perovskite Solar Cells
Research Team under Physics Professor William Jo Develops Next-generation Perovskite Solar Cells The research team led by Professor William Jo from the Department of Physics at Ewha Womans University as part of the Ewha Frontier 10-10 Project developed a next-generation perovskite solar cell material whose efficiency and stability has been validated after undergoing over 2,000 hours of performance tests. The paper detailing the findings, titled “Autonomous control of ion migration at α-FAPbI3 heterointerfaces via interfacial-self-assembled 2D perovskite,” was published online on August 4 (Sun.), in Advanced Energy Materials (IF 24.4, top 2.6 percent in the energy and fuels category percent), a world-renowned energy and fuels journal. Professor William Jo, who is also the Director of the New and Renewable Energy Research Center and the corresponding author of the study, leads the Frontier 10-10 Project at the Department of Physics alongside Ph.D. candidate Jihyun Kim (first author). Together, the team introduced a process that incorporates ammonium ions into next-generation perovskite solar cells for the first time in the world, successfully achieving high efficiency and stability through the formation of a two-dimensional perovskite. The solar cells developed by the research team achieved a maximum efficiency of 24.38 percent and retained 92 percent of their initial performance for over 2,000 hours. It passed the longest test in Korea, lasting over twice as long as conventional solar cell performance tests, and achieved one of the highest results for efficiency and stability in the country. This globally unprecedented feat was achieved by the Ewha research team by introducing a process of adding ammonium ions (NH4+) to tin oxide (SnO2) used in the conventional electron transport layer of perovskite solar cells, thereby preventing charge imbalance within the perovskite thin film and mitigating the decrease in charge extraction capabilities at the interface adjacent to the electron transport layer. The reaction of ammonium ions with tin oxide addresses the defect where ions within the perovskite thin film are adsorbed onto the electron transport layer, thereby improving the efficiency and stability of the cell. Additionally, by utilizing the phenomenon of mutual exchange among cations with low migration barriers, the team induced the self-formation of a two-dimensional perovskite material. This material not only reduced the interface defects in the perovskite but also enhanced device performance by maintaining uniform charge distribution. The research team observed a significant improvement in the charge transport capability of the solar cell, achieving an efficiency of 24.38 percent with a charge rate of 84 percent, while maintaining 91.87 percent of the initial performance stably over 2,070 hours. The research achievements of Professor Jo’s team are credited with advancing the development of next-generation solar cells, which is essential for achieving carbon neutrality, by offering new insights and perspectives into the correlation between migration barriers and charge distribution uniformity. Moreover, these achievements are expected to facilitate the introduction of the world’s first process for adding ammonium ions to next-generation solar cell materials, thereby addressing carbon neutrality and energy challenges through improved charge distribution control. This research was conducted through collaborative efforts between the Ewha Frontier 10-10 Project at the Department of Physics, Professor Ji-Sang Park from the Department of Nano Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University, and Dr. Gee Yeong Kim from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), with support from the National Research Foundation of Korea, including the Priority Research Institute Program, Mid-Career Researcher Program, and Technology Development Program to Solve Climate Change.
Climate Tech Entrepreneur Bootcamp for a Sustainable Future Held
Climate Tech Entrepreneur Bootcamp for a Sustainable Future Held The Ewha Womans University’s Support Corps for Business Startups hosted a Climate Tech Entrepreneur Bootcamp over the course of four days from July 30 (Tue.). Organized under the initiative of the Ewha-Asan UniverCT (University × Climate Tech) by the Ewha Support Corps for Business Startups, the camp was designed to cultivate creative problem-solving skills through mentorships and hands-on training provided by various experts, alongside opportunities to explore solutions for a sustainable future. Director Sang-jun Kim of the Support Corps for Business Startups commented, “In light of the increasing need for developing innovative climate-technology solutions to combat climate change, we organized this event to offer undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to grow as talented entrepreneurs in the field of climate technology.” Held from July 30 (Tue.) to August 2 (Fri.) in the Research Cooperation Building and the University-Industry Collaboration Center at Ewha, the bootcamp was attended by 52 undergraduate and graduate students, including 36 students in 10 teams and 16 individual participants. Education, hands-on training, and mentoring at the event were provided by a diverse group of technical mentors, comprising climate-tech experts, startup professionals, venture capitalists, and master’s and doctoral students from Ewha’s Department of Climate and Energy Systems Engineering and Department of Environmental Science and Engineering. The students attended expert lectures on climate technology market trends, business models, and practical business pitch preparations. They also actively engaged in a range of activities intended to enhance their entrepreneurial capabilities, including brainstorming sessions on climate technology and related ideas, team building, business model development in groups, and customer interview and response analysis exercises. During the Pitching Day event held on the last day of the boot camp, a total of 15 teams presented their climate-tech business plans, utilizing various technologies such as solar power, carbon capture, artificial photosynthesis, and machine learning. Evaluations by venture capitalists and climate-tech experts then selected a total of five outstanding startup teams, which will receive KRW 10 million in commercialization support, along with various other entrepreneurial benefits, including the chance to compete in the University Integrated Demo Day this November. In addition to the Climate Tech Entrepreneur Bootcamp, the Support Corps for Business Startups will run various programs under the Ewha-Asan University initiative to lay the academic foundation for students to start businesses based on climate technology, and foster researcher-led startups within the university to build a technology-driven entrepreneurial ecosystem on campus.

2024 Ewha Science Festival Held The 2024 Ewha Science Festival was held on Monday, July 22 in the Lee Sam-bong Hall of the ECC building, providing unique hands-on scientific learning experiences for the public, including elementary, middle, and high school students. The Ewha Science Festival is a talent donation event in which science professors and students at Ewha participate under the motto of “bringing science to the public.” This year, 28 booths were established on various scientific topics, with the participation of six departments including Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Life Sciences, and Eco Science, centered around the high-tech laboratory of Chemistry and Nano Science at the College of Natural Sciences. Professors from the said departments designed science experiments for the event, while the participating students offered hands-on learning opportunities and engaging exhibits, thereby garnering a high positive response. Visitors to the festival enjoyed the rare opportunity to develop an interest in scientific fields and satisfy their curiosity through hands-on experiences, taking part in experiments with instructions and explanations from Ewha professors and students. Centered around the “Center for Future Sustainable Molecular Design Research” at the Department of Chemistry and Nano Science, which is one of the teams selected for the “Ewha Frontier 10-10 Project” in leading research fields, this festival was organized by the Research Institute for Basic Sciences and Autonomous Priority Research Institute, BK21 Future-oriented LIFE Talent Cultivation Team, alongside the Korea Foundation for Women In Science, Engineering and Technology (WISET), and sponsored by Ewha’s College of Natural Sciences and Office of Admissions.
