The 19th Kim Okgill Memorial Lecture
The Ewha Institute for the Humanities hosted the 19th Kim Okgill Memorial Lecture at Lee Sang-bong Hall in the ECC building on March 29. The “Kim Okgill Memorial Lecture” is an academic series organized to pay homage to Kim Okgill (1921-1990), an extraordinary teacher who served as the 8th president of Ewha. It is designed to further develop the humanities, sociology, natural sciences, and arts and to popularize academic achievements. This year’s memorial lecture was organized to offer a space for scholarship where the emerging issue of sustainability, or the collective awareness of life and ecology, could be discussed. Ursula K. Heise, a professor at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) studying environmental issues and climate change and actively putting her beliefs into practice, was invited as a guest speaker for this lecture. Professor Heise is not only an established ecological critic but also Director of the Institute for Environment and Sustainability and holder of the Marcia H. Howard Term Chair in Literary Studies in the Department of English at UCLA. In addition, she is a researcher and environmental activist who initiated the Stanford Environmental Humanities Project and served as the president of the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment (ASLE) out of a passion for global issues such as the environment and climate change. In her lecture entitled “Beyond Realism: Narrative and Environmental Futures,” Heise emphasized the risks of climate change threaten life on the planet and the need to be aware of these risks and take appropriate actions. She has sought possibilities of thought and imagination from science fiction as a new storytelling strategy for an era of unprecedented environmental degradation and climate change. She enthusiastically delivered an intriguing speech on how literature can provide answers to questions about this new era while introducing various subjects, plots, and narrative strategies from speculative fiction that encourage the development of critical thinking about human sustainability. “We need humanistic introspection going beyond science and technology and a policy regime, namely a new set of values, reconstruction of ethics, and intellectual imagination surpassing existing boundaries, to wisely solve the problems posing a threat to humans,” she remarked with great force. Following the speech, Professor Sohn Ji Ae (International Studies) led an enthusiastic discussion and Q&A session with Ursula K. Heise, Professor Ae-Ryung Kim from the Ewha Institute for the Humanities (majoring in philosophy) and Professor Ji-hyung Park of Environmental Science and Engineering. The Ewha Institute for the Humanities is in charge of the organization of the Kim Okgill Memorial Lectures. It strives to provide a place for new academic discourse while preparing various issues and topics to reinterpret and transmit the virtues and values that Kim Okgill pursued.
2023 Ewha-Harvard International Exchange Program Conducted
Ewha-HCAP (Harvard College in Asia Program), an international exchange program jointly organized by Ewha and Harvard, has been conducted by the two school. HCAP is a conference aimed at creating international networks of students and fostering future experts on Asia through academic and cultural exchanges among students at Harvard and its partner universities across Asia. The program consists of a “Boston Conference” through which selected students from eight Asian partner universities are invited to Harvard and subsequent conferences through which Harvard students are invited to Asian partner universities. Ewha has participated in this program as the sole Korean university since 2007. The Seoul Conference held by Ewha is considered the most fulfilling among Harvard students every year. 2023 HCAP in Boston Ten students from Ewha attended the Ewha-HCAP Boston Conference held at Harvard University in Boston in the U.S. over seven days from January 15 to 21. HCAP features activities designed and operated by the students, such as diverse academic lectures and cultural experiences. The program is composed roughly of an academic exchange program and cultural version. Held on the theme of “Start Small, Think Big: Change Starting From Our Local Community,” the conference was attended by more than 100 students from eight Asian universities: the University of Tokyo, University of Hong Kong, National Taiwan University, Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, National University of Singapore, Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai, and Ewha. Participants returned to their universities with broader global networks based on the academic exchanges listening to lectures from renowned speakers and the various tour programs and social activities prepared by the Harvard delegation. Ewha-HCAP in Seoul The Ewha-Harvard College in Asia Program (HCAP) Seoul Conference, which invites Harvard students to the Ewha campus, was held from March 12 to 19. The Ewha-HCAP Seoul Conference for this year was held as a face-to-face event for the first time since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. It was met with high expectations and drew considerable attention. The subject of the academic exchanges chosen by Ewha students for this year was “Achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs).” The conference was composed of academic lectures from guest speakers and Ewha faculty, campus tours, and several cultural exchange programs such as visiting a traditional market, Gyeongbokgung Palace, and museums. Along with Ewha-HCAP, Ewha maintains a close relationship with Harvard University as the only Korean partner for its exchange programs, including jointly operating Harvard’s Summer School Program since 2006. It is expanding its international networking, including by holding the “Harvard Model Congress Asia (HMCA) 2023” on the Ewha campus in January.
New Spaces in the Ewha Campus for a New Semester
Newly opened living and learning spaces are adding vitality to an Ewha campus bustling with students as a new semester begins. Ewha Womans University pushed ahead with a campus environmental improvement project during vacation to provide smart teaching and learning environments and improve campus convenience for students as they start a new semester. Student Cafeteria Reopened with a Brand-new Look The renewed Student Cafeteria opened in Ewha-Samsung Institutional House (Building C) on March 20. The Office of General Administration (Vice President Dukyoo Jung) relocated the Student Cafeteria from the Human Ecology Building to Ewha-Samsung Institutional House after its operation was suspended due to a refurbishment project for the Human Ecology Building and as a Covid-19 countermeasure. The cafeteria opened with a new look designed to provide a more comfortable environment. This new cafeteria provides convenience not only for students living in the dormitories, but also to others using buildings located on the west side of the campus such as the International Education Building, Ewha-Shinsegae Hall, Ewha-SK Telecom Center, and Ewha-Samsung Education Culture Building. It also provides easy access to students participating in a range of intramural activities because of its location near Welch-Ryang Auditorium and the Student Union. In addition, the Office of General Administration is supporting Ewha through other means such as opening a large café in the International Education Building and normalizing the operating hours of the food court at the ECC to improve campus life during the new semester. Ewha Learning Space, or the Flexible Learning Space, Opened A number of open learning lounges have been prepared for the new semester. The Center for Teaching and Learning, part of the University Innovation Support Project, has been improving underutilized areas on campus such as hallways and lobbies to create spaces for learning activities, interactions, and media use. It also built open-style learning lounges in Science Building D and on the second floor of the Asan Engineering Building over the last vacation. The lounge located on the second basement level of Science Building D has been transformed into a flexible learning space that students can use to learn and perform group activities in different rooms designed for individuals and groups. The space on the second floor of the Asan Engineering Building has also been renovated into a bright and trendy space with more than 20 seats, including individual study rooms, bar tables, and sofa-style seats. Both spaces were specially designed to provide easy access to electric power to learners using their own smart media. The center has a plan to support efficient and convenient learning for students by expanding “Ewha Learning Spaces” tailored to each college and building in several ways, including by surveying demand in the future. The University Library Learning Environment Becomes Smarter and More Convenient With support from the University Innovation Support Project, the University Library has transformed the Audiovisual Archive located on the first floor into the Media Stage complex where IT, media, and electronic devices are freely available. Moreover, the reading space of the Science and Technology Archive on the fifth floor has been refurbished. The space has been reborn as a more pleasant place through a full rearrangement of the Science and Technology Archive, including expanding user spaces by relocating bookcases and now offers learners a view of the Ewha campus. It was reimagined as a more user-friendly place with stand-alone learning spaces by expanding equipment for IT and electronic devices and by replacing existing furniture. Ewha has devised the development strategy of “Ewha Vision 2030+” and is promoting multiple projects to pursue its “A Creative and Innovative Platform Leading to a Sustainable Society” vision. For this year it plans to support students taking on challenges and experiencing success within the campus by focusing on the third objective of Ewha Vision 2030+, “enhancing support for students for their future aspirations and improving the campus environment,” and by accelerating several projects, including establishing integrated supportive service tailored to students and expanding the self-employment support system.
291 Ewha Graduates Pass the 2023 Public Teacher Employment Exam
A total of 291 Ewha graduates passed the final stage of the public teacher employment examination for the 2023 school year. While the recruitment group for this year was reduced by around 17 percent compared with 2022, the acceptance rate of Ewha graduates actually increased. The school also produced top- and second-scoring candidates in counseling, early childhood education, special education, English language, science, mathematics, fine arts, and music in multiple regions across the country. It was considered an excellent outcome. Students who have obtained a teacher’s certificate after completing courses in a college of education, a graduate school of education, or a Teacher Training Program at a general university are eventually selected as eligible candidates for appointment as teachers at public schools through a competitive examination composed of a first round of exams on pedagogy and major curricula and a second-round evaluation including in-depth interviews on teaching aptitude, preparation of teaching and learning guidance plans, and demonstration lessons. Ewha graduates and prospective graduates completing courses at the College of Education (Dean: Gyu-Ho Hwang), the Graduate School of Education (Dean: Eunhye Park Han), and the Teacher Training Program took the competitive examination. Ewha produced a total of 291 successful candidates in this year’s public teacher employment examination, including 217 for secondary school, 47 for elementary school, nine for kindergarten, and 18 for non-curricular positions in school health, library science, nutrition, and counseling. Notably, it produced the top and second-place candidates in multiple regions. Ewha graduates achieved the highest and second highest scores in both early childhood special education and elementary special education in Seoul, continuing the demonstrated strength of the Department of Special Education. In fine arts education, Ewha graduates also took the top and second place. In addition, many other Ewha graduates were honored to score first and second place in Seoul and other regions. Ewha systemically supports students and graduates in their preparation for the public teacher employment exam by maintaining a study room dedicated to the exam, offering special lectures by external experts (including current school teachers who graduated from Ewha), providing a space for and feedback on demonstration lessons, and performing in-depth mock interviews. As a result, Ewha raised the acceptance rate for its graduates and produced many top- and second-place candidates in major fields in the 2023 public teacher employment examination, maintaining its status as the sole comprehensive teacher training institution in Korea.
A Study by an Undergraduate Student Team from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering Published in IEEE Inter
The results of an undergraduate students’ capstone design from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering were recently published in a top-level international academic journal. Over the past year, Ki Soo-min (double majoring in the Department of Brain & Cognitive Sciences and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering) and Byun Gyu-ri (Department of Computer Science and Engineering) conducted a capstone design project researching reducing battery consumption with satisfying the deadline conditions of mobile real-time systems. They succeeded in reducing battery consumption by 71.5 percent and the study results were published in IEEE Internet of Things Journal, a renowned academic journal within the top two percent of journals in the computer science field. This Ewha undergraduate research team presented modelling of techniques studied in different system layers, including dynamic voltage control to manage the processing speed of a CPU, task placement using low-power memory, and task offloading to distant edge servers, as a unified measure. They then optimized their association ‒ i.e., optimized the three techniques across different system layers. The research team elaborately modeled the correlation between runtime and energy effect throughout the entire system path encompassing the CPU, memory, and network subsystems under the condition of the application of the three techniques together. They then developed a scheduling technique to minimize power consumption while meeting all task-level deadlines. In addition, the team designed an algorithm that allows the immediate reflection of scheduling fit for changes in network environments and computing resource conditions. Ki Soo-min and Byun Gyu-ri, co-authors of the paper “Co-optimizing CPU Voltage, Memory Placement, and Task Offloading for Energy-Efficient Mobile Systems” presenting their research, related, “If this technology is commercialized, available hours of battery use in real-time systems, including remotely piloted aerial systems, are expected to be greatly increased.” Professor Hyokyung Bahn, who supervised the research as the corresponding author, remarked, “It is an exceptional result in terms of an outcome by undergraduate students. The research was conducted as an open-source project to ensure transparency of research, which was why it seemed to be more or less easy for the research results to be recognized in academic circles.”
2023 New Student Convocation and “Welcome to EWHA”
Ewha held the 2023 convocation ceremony for new students at Welch-Ryang Auditorium at 10 a.m. on February 24 to welcome a total of 3,547 freshmen. The entrance ceremony was conducted face-to-face for the first time in the four years since the outbreak of COVID-19. It was attended by Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Ewha Womans University Chang Myong-Sue, President Kim Eun Mee, and faculty members on administrative appointments, along with the over 3,000 freshmen. They filled Welch-Ryang Auditorium. In her address, President Kim delivered a congratulatory message to the incoming class of 2023. She stated emphatically, “Trust the education, research, and training that Ewha offers and move boldly forward. Develop an ambitious and lofty dream that you couldn’t even have imagined before entering, one that can now come true as a member of Ewha.” She added, “I hope that you will be a trail-blazer for our new era and a role model for the next generation after graduation following a time of growth through trial and error and experiences of failure, whether big or small, at Ewha.” The remarks were followed by introductions of faculty members on administrative appointments, such as the Vice President, Dean of the Graduate School, and Deans of Colleges, a congratulatory song by the male professors’ choir, and a congratulatory performance by the Ewha Brass Ensemble. The male professors’ choir consisting of former and current instructors at Ewha was formed in 1997. It offers an annual matriculation medley of K-pop songs with customized lyrics. It has long been a sensation among freshmen and provided this year’s new students and their parents with great entertainment and joy as well. Subsequently, a representative of the entering class mounted the platform to pledge to develop her talents as a proud member of Ewha. A total of 3,547 new undergraduate students and 119 transfer freshmen from the College of Pharmacy began their academic journey at Ewha that day. Ninety-eight of these new students entered through a special admission program for international students, including four from the Ewha Global Partnership Program (EGPP), a full-scholarship program for talented women from developing countries. The new students will enjoy their campus lives for four years as members of one or two of Ewha’s 76 departments across 15 colleges. Right after the matriculation ceremony, a welcoming program for the intake of new students entitled “Welcome to Ewha” was held. The “Welcome to Ewha” program used a talk show format to congratulate freshmen on their admission while helping with their adaption to university life. It received a highly favorable response for its diverse content.
