Ewha Holds Dedication Ceremony for New Main Gate
Ewha Womans University held a dedication ceremony for its main gate on March 31 to mark its 140th anniversary, unveiling a newly built entrance that reflects the university’s storied history and status. The new main gate, which was completed after one month of construction beginning in February, is designed both to symbolize Ewha’s identity as it marks its 140th anniversary and to enhance student safety. Consisting of stone pillars and white gates, the gate’s lattice design incorporates Gothic motifs from the façade of the Welch-Ryang Auditorium, ensuring architectural cohesion across campus. The color of the pear blossom relief on the wall keeps the gate in harmony with the surrounding landscape. In addition, a folding gate system was introduced, allowing the white gates to retract into the pillars during normal operation for unobstructed passage and to extend when access is restricted, enhancing operational efficiency and ease of maintenance. Ewha’s main granite gate, which was built in 1958 as part of the post-Korean War campus reconstruction, is a historical site that has served both as a focal point of the democratization movement and a symbolic space for student interaction. It was relocated in 2002 following the demolition of Ewha Bridge and later reinstalled set back within an open forecourt, where it remains in use. The dedication ceremony at the main gate was attended by around 20 participants, including Eun Mee Kim, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Ewha Womans University; Ewha President Hyang-Sook Lee; and key university administrators, as well as representatives of the faculty and staff, students, and alumnae. President Hyang-Sook Lee remarked, “The newly renovated main gate embodies Ewha’s identity, rooted in 140 years of history and tradition, and also symbolizes a new beginning as we move toward the future. I hope the gate will serve as a meaningful place that rekindles cherished memories and pride among members of the Ewha community and shares Ewha’s values and spirit with all who visit.”
Ewha Posts Gains in Three Broad Subject Areas in QS World University Rankings, Strengthening Global Competitiveness
Ewha Posts Gains in Three Broad Subject Areas in QS World University Rankings, Strengthening Global Competitiveness Ewha Womans University reported a significant improvement in three of five broad subject areas compared to the previous year in the 2026 QS World University Rankings by Subject, evidencing an overall improvement in its academic competitiveness. Global higher education analytics firm Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) announced the rankings on March 25 in five broad subject areas—Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences & Management—as well as 55 individual subject areas. Ewha recorded year-on-year gains in three broad subject areas—Arts & Humanities, Life Sciences & Medicine, and Social Sciences & Management—indicating not only strong performance in individual disciplines but also greater competitiveness across these fields as a whole. The university achieved global rankings in 21 subject areas, reflecting its academic excellence across a wide range of fields. Among these, Ewha entered the rankings in Performing Arts for the first time this year, while its rankings in Psychology and Social Policy & Administration improved from the previous year. Ewha placed within the global top 200 in eight subject areas: Art & Design, English Language & Literature, Modern Languages, Performing Arts, Communication & Media Studies, Education, Social Policy & Administration, and Nursing. Among these, the university placed in the 50–100 range in Education, Nursing, and Social Policy & Administration, demonstrating a high degree of global competitiveness in these fields. In addition, Ewha entered the global top 200 in the Arts & Humanities broad subject area, reaffirming its solid academic standing. This achievement reflects the results of sustained investment in discipline-specific competitiveness and research capacity, underscoring Ewha’s rising global standing. Notably, the gains at the broad subject level point to balanced growth across the university’s academic portfolio. Building on this momentum, Ewha plans to further enhance its world-class research environment and expand international joint research projects and academic collaboration, improving its global reputation across both academia and industry.
2026 Ewha–Harvard International Exchange Program Concludes
The 2026 Harvard Undergraduates in Asia Program (HUAP), which brought together students from Ewha Womans University and Harvard University, has come to a successful conclusion. This academic and cultural exchange program connects students from Harvard University with leading universities across Asia to build international networks and cultivate the next generation of Asian leaders, and is conducted as a two-way conference held in both Boston and Seoul. Since 2007, Ewha has been the program’s sole partner university in Korea, steadily strengthening students’ global competencies. The program consists of two conferences held in Boston and Seoul. A delegation of ten Ewha students participated in the Boston conference at Harvard University in January, joining academic lectures, workshops, and cultural exchange programs under the theme “An Interdisciplinary Approach to a Shared Future.” In particular, participants deepened their understanding of global issues through special lectures across a range of academic fields, problem-solving sessions, and academic presentations (HUAPx). In particular, their presentation on Korea’s aging population and shifting demographic structure resonated with an international audience. Cultural exchange activities—including a K-pop performance and an introduction to Korean cuisine—met with a particularly enthusiastic response. The Seoul conference, held at Ewha in March, brought together Ewha and Harvard students to engage in discussions, lectures, and workshops and gain a deeper appreciation for collaboration and empathy. Participants addressed a range of global issues—including Generation Z literacy challenges and the expansion of official development assistance (ODA)—and explored solutions incorporating AI and emerging technologies. They also deepened their understanding of Korean society through traditional cultural activities and visits to major cultural sites. In this way, HUAP has evolved beyond a simple study abroad or short-term exchange into a practice-based global education model in which students are encouraged to actively plan and run the program, gaining hands-on experience in international collaboration. In particular, Ewha students not only participated in the Boston conference but also played a leading role in organizing and hosting the Seoul conference, further strengthening their planning skills and leadership.
Ewha Hosts Special Lecture by Former New Zealand Prime Minister Jenny Shipley
Ewha Hosts Special Lecture by Former New Zealand Prime Minister Jenny Shipley The Ewha Global Institute for Sustainable Partnership and Empowerment (EGISE) held a special lecture featuring former New Zealand Prime Minister Jenny Shipley on the theme “Women Leading Change: Power, Responsibilities, and Global Impact” at the Emerson Chapel in Case Hall on March 13. This was the first session of the “Global Leaders Lecture Series,” commemorating Ewha’s 140th anniversary, with approximately 300 students and others in attendance. Shipley served as New Zealand’s first female prime minister from 1997 to 1999 and chaired the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in 1999, which was a major turning point for cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. As a member of Club de Madrid, an organization of former heads of state, and the Council of Women World Leaders, she has presented insights on social integration, diversity, and strategies for a sustainable future. She recently visited Korea as a speaker at the Global Engagement & Empowerment Forum on Sustainable Development (GEEF) 2026 at Yonsei University. After opening remarks delivered by Ewha President Hyang-Sook Lee, Shipley presented key elements of leadership, including morality, clarity of values, critical analytical skills, and consistent leadership philosophy. In particular, she emphasized accountability in the era of artificial intelligence (AI), stating that those who drive technological innovation must also bear responsibility for its outcomes. She also stressed that humans should guide the direction of AI development and emphasized that cooperation between the sexes is crucial for this goal. Referring to cases of gender equality in the New Zealand Parliament, Shipley also encouraged women to take on a more active role and noted that women’s leadership is essential for making decisions about human-centered technology and a sustainable future. After the lecture, discussion of the role of women’s leadership in the AI era continued through a Q&A session. EGISE plans to build more platforms for global cooperation and action in the future. Ewha, marking its 140th anniversary, will strengthen global competitiveness in research and education through various commemorative initiatives, including lectures by global leaders, international conferences, and academic exchanges.
