Ewha’s Global Programs Firing Up the Summer of 2023
During the summer vacation in 2023, Ewha launched various global programs across the world including the Americas, Europe, and Asia to broaden Ewha members’ global experiences and support the nurturing of global female talent. Under the 2023 Ewha Summer Global Frontier Program supported by the Office of Student Affairs, 28 participants in seven teams travelled to the U.S. and eight European nations to conduct overseas exploration activities during the summer vacation. The “Ewha Global Frontier” is a short-term overseas exploratory program designed to foster well-rounded global female leaders with a daring spirit, outstanding drive, and problem-solving skills. Through the program, students independently select a topic and plan for exploration in teams and then visit international bodies, public institutions, global corporations, and universities to explore their chosen topic, with airfare and exploration expenses funded as a scholarship. The program has been met with a high satisfaction rate among participating students. Meanwhile, a total of 65 participants in six teams have successfully completed their activities under the Faculty-led Study Abroad Program for First Half of 2023. Supported by the Office of International Affairs to strengthen Ewha students’ global competency, the Faculty-led Study Abroad Program is an overseas learning program in which professors travel overseas with their students during vacation time to conduct joint classes and seminars with prominent overseas universities and institutions. The program is highly popular among students, not least for the opportunity to earn extra credits. As part of the program, Ewha’s faculty-led teams, such as from the Department of Architecture, the Department of Climate and Energy Systems Engineering, the Division of Design, the Division of Nursing, the Department of International Studies, and the Department of Global Korean Studies, have visited various countries including the U.S., Canada, and Japan to perform a range of learning activities. The 2023 Ewha-CUHK Global Student Partnership (GSP), an academic and cultural exchange program jointly organized by Ewha and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), has been successfully conducted in both Hong Kong and Seoul. The GSP, a short-term special exchange program conducted with a foreign university, is a program optimized for cultivating students’ global competencies in that it allows participants to take the initiative in the overall process of the program from planning to execution. Following the Ewha-Harvard College in Asia Program (HCAP), which has been jointly conducted with Harvard University since 2007, Ewha has been running the GSP with the CUHK since 2019. A total of 16 students from Ewha and the CUHK gathered on the Ewha campus in July and on the CUHK campus in August, respectively, where they planned and held conferences and various cultural, social, and academic exchange programs on their own initiative under the theme of “Sustainability and Waste Recycling,” thereby contributing to the development of global leadership, networking, and experiences.

Research of Professor Suyeon Cho-led Team Selected as the Cover of World-Renowned Scientific Journal Chemical Reviews
Research of Professor Suyeon Cho-led Team Selected as the Cover of World-Renowned Scientific Journal Chemical Reviews The research team led by Professor Suyeon Cho of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science has published a groundbreaking review paper on designing low-dimensional materials (LDMs) to build ultra-high-speed, high-density semiconductor devices required for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The research paper by Professor Cho’s team has been selected for the cover of the international scientific journal Chemical Reviews (IF: 72.087). It was co-authored by Seungyeon Lee from the Graduate Program in System Health Science and Engineering of Ewha’s BK 21 FOUR program, in collaboration with the team led by Professor Yang Heejun of KAIST’s Department of Physics. The paper, titled “Phase-Engineering of 2D Materials,” was published online on August 17, 2023 (Thu.). The Fourth Industrial Revolution, characterized as ICT technologies ranging from AI and 5G mobile communication services to autonomous vehicles and robots, is closely linked to the development of system semiconductors. To realize the development of ultra-small, high-performance system semiconductors, biomimetic semiconductor devices with ultra-low power, high density and high response speed are attracting great expectations as an innovative way to reduce the load incurred by communication and calculation. With the aim to develop next-generation semiconductor devices with high density and high response speed, such as biomimetic semiconductor devices, the paper published by Professor Cho’s team reported various research findings and introduced their significance in terms of controlling diverse structural phases and movements of low-dimensional materials at the nanoscale. The paper also reported that numerous follow-up studies on low-dimensional materials will be able to utilize not only metal-insulator transitions but also magnetism of 2D materials, strongly correlated band structures and phase transitions resulting from changes in topological relations. Notably, the paper verified that structural phase engineering using electrical, optical and plasma post-processing could form a new low-dimensional phase boundary, possibly leading to the development of new materials. The utilization of this technology is expected to enable fast data processing, which may enhance the ease of use for technologies requiring high response speed in real time, such as 5G service-based, massive real-time services and autonomous vehicle technologies.

Moreover, the event is expected to help generate ideas for innovative future finance and raise the awareness on future finance among young people through the support of youth employment.
Dedication Ceremony Held to Celebrate the Remodeling and Partial Construction of Hak-gwan
Hak-gwan reborn as a future-oriented educational space where tradition and high technology coexist Dedication ceremony successfully held with the attendance of about 250 participants including donors Ewha Womans University held a dedication ceremony to celebrate the remodeling and partial construction of Hak-gwan in the square in front of the building on August 30, 2023 (Wed.). The ceremony was attended by about 250 participants, such as Ewha officials including Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Ewha Womans University Chang Myong-Sue, President Eun Mee Kim, former Ewha Presidents Chang Sang and Kim Heisook, and President Lee Myeong-kyeong of the Ewha Alumnae Association; donors such as Chairperson Moo Kyung Jung of the Korea Zinc ESG Committee, who was attended on behalf of Korea Zinc’s Honorary Chairperson Choi Chang-gurl, Chairperson Yu Jung-geun of the Gyeongwon Cultural Foundation, and Chairperson Jeong So-yeong of the Heunghan Foundation; and other distinguished guests from outside Ewha including Head of the Seodaemun-gu Office Lee Sung-heon, in order to celebrate the new beginning of Hak-gwan, which has been reborn as a future-oriented educational space where tradition and high technology coexist. At its inception, Hak-gwan consisted of ten wooden buildings that were erected to meet the demand from the rapid increase in the number of students in the post-Korean War era. Hak-gwan was completed in 1964 after five rounds of construction projects. It soon came to accommodate so many classes that it was nicknamed “C-gwan” after the first letter of “classrooms” and also served as a central hub for liberal arts courses, various general elective classes, and large-scale lectures. Hak-gwan is a building of fond memories where almost all Ewha students have had at least one class. Due to the building’s deterioration, it was selected for reconstruction as part of the Campus Master Plan in 2014, and it has been transformed once again in the two and a half years after the commencement of the latest remodeling and partial construction project in 2021. The Hak-gwan building now comprises one basement floor and eight above-ground floors, with a total ground area of about 17,640 m2. As the building includes a multipurpose hall suitable for sports activities like basketball, a flexible learning space, an open computer lab, a 400-seat tiered lecture hall, and smart, high-tech classrooms, it has become a 21st-century learning space that combines both humanistic imagination and advanced technology. Among these facilities, the flexible learning space will be used as a creative space for study and relaxation. It has been named the “Chung Ii-sook Hall” in honor of former Ewha President Chung Ii-sook who led the school into its second century under the vision of the “University as a Center of Education and Research.” Meanwhile, other spaces were named after donors: the “Korea Zinc Lecture Hall,” suitable for various classroom activities like theater performances; the “Heunghan Foundation Lecture Hall,” which has been transformed into a comfortable classroom environment; the “Europa Leseraum,” a reading room sponsored by alumna Kim Jeong-ok; the Computer Lab generously sponsored by alumnae of the College of Liberal Arts and the alumnae associations from eight departments; and the Active Learning Classroom created through a generous donation by the International Foundation for Ewha Womans University (IFEWU). In addition to the remodeling and partial construction of Hak-gwan, as part of the preparation for the 150th anniversary of its founding, Ewha plans to reconstruct Helen Hall, Ewha’s first library, into a state-of-the-art library facility, and the Human Ecology Building into a space for multidisciplinary convergence and research as well as university-industry collaboration and business startups for four Ewha colleges, along with the entire western area of the campus. The continuous improvement of the education and research infrastructure will enable Ewha to lead the educational environment in the future and play a leading role in nurturing convergence talent in line with the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
