International Studies

All information and regulations stated below are effective as of 2022 Spring Semester.

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR INTERNSHIP CREDIT

  1. As part of the GSIS curriculum, students admitted before 2022 Spring are required to complete a mandatory short-term internship, which is equivalent to one (1) credit or approximately one month of full time work (160 hours) minimum.
    • Internship credit varies depending on the duration, workload and location of internship (see below).
    • Long-term internships are optional.
    • Long-term internships can be taken at the same institution as the short-term internship (modified regulation, 2010)
    • Exceptions
      1. A. Students who are employed (full-time position only) can receive a short-term internship credit (1 credit) by submitting their employment verification certificates. Student must be employed (full-time only) during the semester they are receiving the internship credit. The GCMC committee will review all other cases of employment to determine internship credit eligibility.
      2. B. The 5 student council members (President, Vice President, Treasurer, Marketing and Events Coordinator, and PhD Representative) can receive a short-term internship credit (1 credit) for their 1 year of service (2 consecutive semesters) as student council members. Students must register for the short-term internship credit in their 2nd semester as student council member. Please see below for further instructions on fulfilling the minimum work hours.
      3. i. Supervisor: Department Chair
      4. ii. Minimum work hours: Students must fulfill the minimum 160 work hours in 2 consecutive semesters.
      5. iii. Work hour verification: Students need to fill in their time sheet every month. Please obtain the supervisor’s signature at the beginning of each month (for the previous month). When obtaining the signature, provide records and proofs of their work hours (e.g., meeting minutes).
      6. iv. Employment contract: Each student council member needs to obtain a contract from the supervisor.
      7. v. Only students who fulfill the minimum 160 work hours in 2 consecutive semesters can receive the short-term internship credit.
  2. Students cannot apply for the short-term internship credit in the first semester.
  3. Students who fail to submit all necessary forms by the evaluation submission deadline (see p.4 Proposal Application, Course Registration, & Evaluation Submission Schedule) will automatically receive an ‘F’ (grade is not changeable).
    • Students who are 1) unable to meet the required work hours or 2) unable to submit the required documents for evaluation should withdraw from the internship course during the course withdrawal period.
  4. If a student’s working hours fulfill the requirements of both the short-term and long-term internships, they can receive the designated credits for both.
    • The work hours CANNOT overlap.
  5. An internship taken during one’s leave of absence can also be accepted for credits provided that it follows the same proper procedure stated below.
    • Students should register for the internship course and receive the internship credit(s) on the semester they return to school.

STEP 1. Submission of Internship Proposal Form

Students are required to submit a proposal form and other documents required before the beginning of the internship. If a student’s internship takes place during a leave of absence, STEP 1 should be done before the student takes the leave of absence.

Special Exemptions

Students with internships in the following organizations/institutions only need to submit the proposal form. The contract can be replaced by a certificate of the internship:

  1. a. Internship institutes with an MOU between GSIS
  2. b. The UN
  3. c. Other UN-affiliated institutes

All confidential information submitted will remain undisclosed.

STEP 2. Document Screening by the GCMC Chair (2-1) & Announcement of Proposal Approval Results (2-2)

Result of the screening will be sent through the e-mail individually.

STEP 3. Registration of the Internship Course

Only students who have received an approval from the GCMC chair are allowed to register the course.

Students who fail to receive the approval can submit a revised proposal for the next round of submission on or before its given deadlines or withdraw the course registration during the withdrawal period of the given semester. Failure to withdraw the course will automatically result to a grade of ‘F.’

Please note that approval of the proposal (STEP 2) from the GCMC chair does not automatically translate into credits. The student has to register the course during the course registration period of the semester in order for the internship to get credited on the program.

Evaluation Forms should be sealed as a confidential letter

The Evaluation Form should be provided to the internship supervisor at the beginning of the internship and should be passed to the GCMC office by designated deadline around early June for the Spring Semester or early December for the Fall Semester to obtain a grade. Grade will be based on the employer evaluation and the student report.

Evaluation forms can either be handed over by the students directly to the GCMC office provided that it is sealed with the evaluator’s signature, sent through e-mail by the supervisor to the GCMC e-mail address or sent by mail by the company.
