Hyunkyu (Sean) Jang joined the Graduate School of International Studies at Ewha Womans University in 2024. Professor Jang received his Ph.D. in Marketing from the University of Texas at Austin, USA. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master of Science in Business Administration, both from Seoul National University, South Korea. Dr. Jang’s research interests lie in applying machine-learning to marketing to obtain insights that assist decision makers in both for-profit and non-profit sectors. In particular, he uses machine-learning algorithms to analyze large datasets of facial and visual images and text data, extracting features of images and texts and examining the influence of these features on various consumer decisions and evaluations, such as charitable donations and star ratings for services. His research has been published in Psychology & Marketing, the Journal of Consumer Behavior, Journal of Macro-Marketing, Journal of Consumer Marketing, and Journal of Social Marketing, among others. Prior to entering academia, he worked as a management consultant for McKinsey & Company, where he advised leading global companies and organizations across a range of industries, including electronics, financial services, and government. Thereafter, he joined the MBA program at Columbia University with the sponsorship of McKinsey & Company. It was then that he decided to pursue a career in academia and joined the Ph.D. program at the University of Texas at Austin. Professor Jang has extensive international experience. He served as an exchange student at ESSEC in France while in college, has traveled extensively, and has worked in several countries with consultants from over ten different countries.
