On March 27, we had the opportunity to welcome Ms. Yery Heo from World Vision Korea, who provided an in-depth overview of the organization’s role in international development. The lecture began by outlining the unique characteristics of NGOs, emphasizing their community-based approach, focus on local capacity building, and ability to operate in regions where governments or private sectors face limitations. She also highlighted key challenges NGOs encounter, including funding dependency and sensitivity to political and institutional environments.

The session further explored World Vision’s organizational strengths, including its structured program management, specialized expertise across sectors such as health, education, WASH, and livelihoods, and its extensive field experience built on 76 years of organizational learning and practice. Through standardized systems and long-term area development project implementation, often lasting 15 to 20 years, World Vision aims to ensure sustainable impact and improved well-being for vulnerable children worldwide. The lecture also introduced the organization’s global partnership model, illustrating how coordinated collaboration across a partnership of around 100 countries - including global centers, support offices, regional offices, and field offices - enables effective and coordinated program delivery.

In the latter part of the lecture, the speaker focused on World Vision Korea’s impact, including its large-scale international program portfolio spanning over 50 countries and diverse sectors. Emphasis was placed on the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration with governments, international organizations, and local communities to maximize effectiveness. She concluded by encouraging a broader perspective on development work, urging students to go beyond formal systems and consider the bigger picture: “Think beyond the institution.”

3월 27일, 한국 월드비전의 국제사업본부 글로벌임팩트팀에서 근무하고 계시는 허예리 간사님께서 오셔서 국제개발협력에서 기관들이 수행하는 역할과 월드비전의 활동에 대해 강연을 해주셨습니다. 강연은 NGO의 고유한 특징을 설명하는 것으로 시작하여 지역사회 기반 접근 방식, 현지 역량 강화에 대한 강조, 그리고 정부나 민간 부문이 접근하기 어려운 지역에서 활동할 수 있는 역할까지 폭넓게 다루어 졌습니다. 또한 허 간사님께서는 NGO가 직면하는 주요 과제로서 재원 의존성과 정치적·제도적 환경에 대한 높은 민감성을 지적하셨습니다.

이어지는 세션에서는 월드비전의 조직적 강점이 소개되었습니다. 구체적으로는 체계적인 프로그램 관리, 보건·교육·WASH·생계 등 다양한 분야에서의 전문성, 그리고 76년간 축적된 학습과 실천에 기반한 풍부한 현장 경험 등이 강점으로 언급되었습니다. 특히 월드비전은 표준화된 시스템과 15~20년에 걸친 장기 지역개발사업 수행을 통해, 전 세계 취약한 아동들의 삶의 질을 지속적으로 개선하고 지속 가능한 변화를 만들어내고자 하였습니다. 또한 글로벌 센터, 지원 사무소, 지역 사무소, 현장 사무소를 아우르는 약 100개국 규모의 글로벌 파트너십 간 긴밀하게 협력하는 구조를 통해, 효과적이고 체계적인 사업 운영을 하고 있습니다. 

강연 후반부에서는 월드비전의 성과가 소개되었으며, 50개국 이상 다양한 분야에 걸쳐 진행되고 있는 대규모 국제 프로그램이 강조되었습니다. 특히 정부, 국제기구, 지역사회 등 다양한 이해관계자와의 협력이 사업의 효과성을 극대화하는 데 중요한 역할을 한다는 점이 강조되었습니다. 마지막으로 허 간사님께서는 개발 분야를 바라보는 넓은 시각의 중요성을 언급하며, 기관에 국한되지 않고 더 큰 그림을 생각할 것을 학생들에게 당부했습니다.
