Transformation Labs to Fast-Track Sustainable Development

President Eun Mee Kim would like to inform the GSIS community of an exciting new initiative: Transformation Labs to Fast-Track Research on Sustainable Development. This project grows out of the 2019  UN Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR) in 2019 – to which President Kim contributed as one of 16 expert scientists. This follow-on initiative is being led by the University of Copenhagen and Future Earth. Over the course of 2023, the project will convene a sustainability science conference – totally on-line and free so it excludes no one and inspired by the Dephi process. The process is endorsed by Future Earth and members of both the past and current GSDR groups are also engaged.

Transformation Labs invite researchers to join this critical effort to ensure a timely and just transition to sustainable development. Researchers can register their ideas on what they see as the key challenge(s) to achieving sustainable development. In line with the GSDR 2019 report, we invite research ideas related to the following sustainable development entry points: 1) Human well-being and capacities; 2) Sustainable and just economies; 3) Sustainable food systems and healthy nutrition; 4) Energy decarbonization with universal access; 5) Urban and peri-urban development; 6) Global environmental commons.

Researchers can participate in various ways to help identify promising innovations to fast-track sustainable development. They can submit research ideas; lead research on selected ideas; and/or participate in discussions to flesh out and advance research ideas. Ultimately, fast-tracked research ideas will be published via a paper in September 2023 - with the aim of informing the next UN Global Sustainable Development Report (which will begin being developed in October 2023).

This is a great opportunity for researchers to leverage an international platform to fast-track their research and get their ideas in front of policymakers and thought leaders in the field of sustainable development.

Deadline for registration is February 1, 2023.
